The main teaching objective is to acquaint students with the multifaceted interconnections between Europe and the non-Western world.  Transnational history and the history of globalization are thereby important points of reference in terms of methodology and content. Courses are offered under the aegis of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (D-GESS) programme and are designed to introduce students to the most important historical processes of transformation since the late eighteenth century and their relevance to the present. The focus is on the emergence of scientific disciplines, ways of thinking and cultures of experts in the nineteenth and twentieth century.

Advanced courses are offered in the fields of history of knowledge and are part of the interdisciplinary Masters programme History and Philosophy of Knowledge. Furthermore, the chair contributes two general history lectures to the BA programme in Public Policy.
